Confronting the Truth
"Confronting the Truth" (2006) shows how countries which have experienced massive human rights violations have created official, independent bodies known as truth commissions. Since 1983, truth commissions have been established in over 20 countries, in all parts of the world. “Confronting the Truth” documents the work of truth commissions in South Africa, Peru, East Timor, and Morocco. Taking testimony from victims and perpetrators, and conducting detailed investigations, truth commissions create a historical record of abuses that have often remained secret. They identify patterns of abuse, and the structural and institutional weaknesses, societal and cultural problems, and weak legal systems that made the violations possible. To remedy these faults, they recommend governmental, societal and legal reforms to address the pain of the past, to safeguard human rights and due process, and to ensure that the horror will not be repeated.
This film is written and produced by Steve York in association with the United States Institute for Peace (USIP) and the International Center on Nonviolent Conflict. |

National Campaign for Fair Elections
The National Campaign seeks to foster a national movement committed to ensuring that all voters have an equal opportunity to cast a meaningful ballot. Through their hotline and dedicated volunteers they help tens of thousands of voters access the polls and overcome the obstacles to the ballot box. NCFE looks for progressive election reforms at the state and local level, litigates where voting rights are violated and brings communities together to educate and mobilize citizens about fair elections. Given the Florida debacle in 2000, and the charges of ballot tampering in Ohio in 2004, we will hear about what changes are needed, and are happening, to ensure a just election in 2008. |
